A Colorado Mountain Homebirth

I first met Danielle when I was pregnant with Eliza and she was pregnant with her oldest daughter. We met at birth classes at Baby + Co, the birth center we both gave birth at. She had actually reached out to me about birth photography…but since we were both due within just a few days of each other - I couldn’t take her on as a client. We both had beautiful births though, and we got to work together when she had her next baby at the Denver Center for Birth and Wellness.

When I found out she was planning a homebirth with this baby - I was over the moon excited for her. They live in Conifer…in the most beautiful home set amidst big, beautiful pine and aspen trees. Her births are relatively quick, and so we all were a little anxious about making it from Denver to Conifer with enough time.

But as many of you know…third births are often wild cards. Danielle’s started early in the morning….but it took some time for things to intensify. In reality - it really wasn’t much time at all - but when you’ve had fast births in the past…a “normal” active labor phase can feel long.

This was one of the first births I attended after Grover was born…so you’ll actually see him in a few images. Ry (my husband) drove him up to their home after it seemed like it could be several more hours (and upon Danielle’s invitation, of course). But as birth often does…as soon as Grover got here, she went through transition…and her baby was born about 30 minutes later.

This birth…the melding of the outdoor world and their beautiful cozy, home…was just what I needed coming back from maternity leave. It reminded me of why I love this work so much. It’s not only one birth…it’s years and years of relationship with families and midwives and fellow birth workers. What a blessing to have found it.
