The Best OBs in Denver
If you’re searching for the best OB in Denver, you’ve come to the right place. As a doula and photographer with over a decade of experience across hundreds of births, I know the Denver birth landscape well. While many of my clients work with midwives (both at home, at birth centers, and in the hospital) many also work with some outstanding obstetricians across the Denver metro area. Some families prefer to work with an OB because they have a higher risk medical condition or a higher risk pregnancy. Other folks simply like the idea of working with someone with has the highest level of formal medical education. There isn't one right choice. It's about finding the provider whose philosophy, communication style, and expertise are the best fit for your pregnancy, your values, and your birth goals
When I gave birth to my oldest daughter, I worked with a wonderful OB (who happened to be my neighbor growing up). She took exceptional care of me during my first pregnancy and birth…and fully supported my desire to have an unmedicated birth. We only briefly began to talk about induction when I was approaching 41 weeks (and she didn’t even think to schedule the induction before I hit 42). Thankfully, I went into labor on my own the following day…had a super uncomplicated and fast first birth…and my OB een left an office full of patients to catch my baby.
OBs sometimes get a bad reputation in the natural birth community for over utilize interventions, but the reality is that many of them truly want to help women/birthing folks have safe and happy pregnancies and births. And for many pregnancies, having a highly skilled obstetrician can be absolutely life-saving.
I've compiled this list of my favorite Denver-area OBs based on my own experiences attending births, recommendations from hundreds of clients, and feedback from the local birth community. My hope is that this becomes a helpful resource for families looking for an obstetrician in Denver. If you've had a wonderful experience with an OB in the Denver area, I'd love to hear from you. Dr. Matthew Breeden - Works at Presbyterian St Lukes. He is always my go-to recommendation for anyone who is delivering twins, but he’s truly is just a fabulous OB all around. He listens to his patients, he is responsive, he doesn’t fear-monger, and he provides all around excellent evidence based care. Many of my clients find him to be more compassionate than other female providers they’ve seen in the past. His empathy certainly stands out to me.
Dr. Kelsey Ward and Dr. Lisa Wynn - Work at UCH Highlands Ranch. Both of these OBs are well-loved through our community for giving informed consent and supporting clients in the personal choices they make for their births. I love the entire staff at UCH - Highlands Ranch (from the OBs to the nurses to the midwives!).
Dr. Kathleen Sanders and Dr. Sarah Bascle with Bella Health and Wellness- Attends births at Swedish Medical Center. Bella Health and Wellness is a large and popular practice in South Denver. Their team of midwives and OBs are known for supporting clients birth wishes with compassion. Dr. Hall (Denver’s most well-known vaginal breech birth provider) is also currently on staff at Bella. When I think of Dr. Sanders, I think of an obstetrician who walks into the room with the presence of a midwife. She is patient, calm, present, and highly skilled. (Important note: Bella is a faith-based practice and anti-abortion.)
Dr. Sarah Payne - Delivers babies at Rose. Dr. Payne is a personal friend of mine…and I think my clients love her because she is such a warm, fun, and kind provider. Several of my clients with complicated past birth histories or medical situations have found a safe landing place with Dr. Payne.
Dr. Stephanie Owens - Attends births at Rose. I have had several clients tell me that Dr. Owens has made all the difference in their prenatal care and birth experiences.
I’ve had many clients work with Dr. Payne and Dr. Owens, but they have also been patients who are open to induction, epidurals, and a more medical birth experience.
Dr. Heidi Oster - Delivers babies at Skyridge. She provides a warm and welcoming office environment…and is incredible at providing informed consent to her clients! She is also open to collaborating with homebirth midwives.
Dr. Wayne Furr - Practice at Skyridge. This is another practice that is very supportive of community based birth and hospital transfers. Dr. Furr has been practicing for decades and has a team of midwives and providers that seek to provide evidence based care in the hospital, while also respecting patient’s rights and choices.
Dr. Lindsay Eun and Kaitlin Mar - Part of Westside Women’s Care. Delivers babies at Lutheran Medical Center. The west Denver community loves these providers and call them kind, compassionate, and highly skilled. Lutheran’s new hospital is beautiful, big, and full of providers that care deeply for their patients and the larger community.
Dr. Kimberly van Scriver - Attends births at Littleton Hospital with South Denver OB/GYN. In the births I’ve attended with her, Dr. VanScriver respects her patients autonomy and works to make a hospital birth as “home-like” as possible.
Dr. Kelly Lennon - Works at Littleton/Castle Rock with South Denver OB/GYN. Another community favorite (that I’ve worked with as well over the years). He provides informed consent and truly respects bodily autonomy.
Both of the above providers are excellent choices for folks desiring a more natural, unmedicated birth experience in the hospital.
Dr. Edwin Anselmi - I haven’t had the chance to work with him yet but I continue to hear good things. Dr. Anselmi is actually a family medicine doctor who delivers babies at Swedish. He is very supportive of midwives and homebirths (another great provider to collaborate with) and he supposedly has been training with Dr. Michael Hall so he can offer more vaginal breech births. Speaking of Dr. Hall…the Denver birth community will forever be thankful for his commitment to practice and teach vaginal breech birth. Dr. Hall retired but is back practicing at Swedish!
Dr. Shane Reeves - an incredible Maternal Fetal Med doctor who supports homebirth and is happy to collaborate with community midwives. He is a great resource for anyone needing extra specialized care.
